Courses and Activities for 2012

Outdoor Adventure Warehouse has put together a great new programme for 2012. Our programme has been divided into three areas; Courses, Activities and Wilderness / Bushcraft.

Courses

Our courses have been put together to develop your personal skills, some gaining you National Governing Body Awards, these allowing you to begin life as an outdoor instructor or supervisor. Others, such as our tailored First Aid courses, may be a requirement for your job or just a refresher to satisfy your own peace of mind.

Courses will include:

The Basic Expedition Leader Award (BEL)

A nationally recognised and highly recommended leadership award for adults wishing to supervise groups in low level areas such as the South Downs. This includes a camp craft element.

Day Walk Leader Award (DWL)

Similar to BEL but more suited to those just wishing to lead groups on day excursions without the camping element included.

National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS)

This is a personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages. All courses include knowledge of safety and access issues when walking in the countryside, as well as an understanding of environmental issues and awareness of impacts.

Bronze NNAS Award – navigation in the countryside using paths tracks and other linear features, basic map interpretation and compass work is included. Distance 2-5 kilometres

Silver NNAS Award – navigation in the countryside using skills acquired at bronze level and adding skills required to navigate to features and places some distance from paths and tracks, accurate compass work is required and an ability to use appropriate navigational techniques to go across country in some cases, eg. choosing an appropriate attack point. Distance 5-8 kilometres

Gold NNAS Award – navigation in the countryside using skills of the first two levels, but adding techniques and skills for dealing with complex contour features large and small. Distance 6-10 kilometres

NB: None of these awards are to be used as a leadership qualification of any kind.

First Aid Courses

First Aid courses including Emergency First Aid (8 hour) to First Aid at Work (3 day course). All courses can be tailored to suit specific requirements such as First Aid in the Work Place, Waterborne First Aid, Wilderness First Aid and Mountain First Aid. We also have the facility to run these courses at alternative venues suited to your specific needs.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

A nationally recognised award scheme for young persons between 13 and 24 years of age. Our instructors are D of E accredited expedition assessors and deliver / assess all levels of the award from Bronze through to Gold. We also welcome other DofE groups to our centre if accommodation is required.

Bushcraft / Wilderness Courses

An opportunity to develop your bushcraft skills, enhance knowledge of natural surroundings and promote living in an outdoor-style environment. We will cover a variety of aspects such as safe use and maintenance of cutting tools, wilderness fire making techniques, collection, purification and transportation of water, natural shelter types; construction and considerations, natural bindings and cord, rope lashing & basic knots and wilderness cookery.

Rock Climbing and Abseiling

Provision of both climbing and abseiling introductions and tailor made tuition. This can be on natural rock outcrops or purpose built structures including indoor walls and mobile climbing towers.

Canoeing and Kayaking

Various tailored courses from taster sessions to river trips across the UK. Our experienced coaches are skilled at running BCU PaddlePower, Star Awards, Foundation Safety and Rescue and UKCC L1 Coach Courses.
Activities

Slightly differing from the courses, a selection of day activities for both children, adults and families have been put together. These include taster sessions in kayaking and climbing as well as multi activity variety days to incorporate both learning new skills and having fun in the outdoors.

Kayaking and Climbing Taster Day

This will involve rock climbing instruction in the morning at a local sandstone outcrop followed by an introduction to kayaking after lunch. This activity will be both fun and exciting and can be tailored to all age groups as well as stag or hen parties!

Multi Activity Days

These are aimed at the younger generation wishing to taste the outdoors away from their parents! Activities could include Recreational Tree Climbing and Abseiling, Low Ropes Courses, Orienteering, Raft Building, Bushcraft, Team Building and Camp Fires to name just a few.

Recreational Tree Climbing

You can now climb trees safely and for fun. Our tree climbing involves using a rope and harness, climbers are tied in and on a rope at all times. Unlike free climbing, which most of us did as children, this system allows us to climb bigger trees very safely.
